A man on a mobility scooter is trying to get down a sidewalk in West Hollywood, and a small delivery robot blocks his path. It swerves in front of him, again and again. "Everywhere that I moved, it blocks," he said afterward, "and then it literally went across the sidewalk to cut me off." Then the robot stops. He is already accelerating to get around it, so the sudden stop drops the machine right where he is going, and he hits it.

He was in a lot of pain that day, from a medical problem that had nothing to do with robots. He has cerebral palsy. He uses crutches for short distances and the scooter for longer ones. He said the scooter did not work right after that.

The pitch for these robots is all about delivery. Your food comes faster. It comes cheaper. It comes without a two-ton car idling at the curb. This is a different story, and the man on the scooter is caught in the middle of it. The robot did not have to hit him to make him move. The sidewalk robot pays for its own convenience with the attention, the hesitation, and the small path changes of everyone it passes, and it was built to be adorable so that no one would send the bill.

Start with the cheapest version of that cost, the one you have probably already paid. A box on wheels rolls toward you at walking speed, its corners rounded, an orange flag on top, two big eyes. You slow a little. You read which way it means to go. You turn a shoulder, give it half a step, and it passes. A second, maybe less. You would not call it a cost, and that is the whole point. The tax is so small for almost everyone that no one thinks to call it a tax.

Now watch it get bigger, one body at a time.

A man in Chicago thought the first robot he saw was neat, even futuristic. Then he was out walking with his family and one came at them and all of them had to step aside. "We were on the one strip reserved for walking," he said, "and we were having to get out of the way." Nothing was damaged. He just noticed, standing there, that the pavement set aside for people had a paying customer now, and it was not him.

Watch the robot borrow a hand. One of them, named Siddhant, gets stuck at a crosswalk because the light will not change and it cannot press the button, because it has no arms. So its screen asks whoever is nearby: "Push crosswalk button for me?" The delivery stays fully automatic only as long as a stranger agrees to become part of the machine for a second.

Watch two of them meet on a sidewalk in Miami too narrow for both, and freeze nose to nose, until one backs out and lets the other through while a person at a nearby table watches. Watch a reporter follow one robot around Chicago for about seven hours: four orders, almost two hours parked near a bagel shop, forty-five minutes waiting outside a restaurant, and in between it clipped a lamppost, ran into a stoop, bumped a curb, and made people squeeze past it on a crowded sidewalk. Most of the day it did nothing at all. It still made work for everyone who had to read it and go around.

There are a lot of these now, and there got to be a lot of them fast. In 2023, one company had robots in two Los Angeles neighborhoods. By the spring of 2026 it had more than five hundred across forty. Its own count of robots out working on an average day rose from seventy-three at the start of 2025 to more than eight hundred a year later. A thing you might see once became a thing you pass on the way to lunch.

Here is what no one measures. The company can tell you how many robots it runs, how many orders they carried, how many hours they were ready, how many neighborhoods they reached. But nowhere in Los Angeles or West Hollywood is there a public count of the person who paused, turned a shoulder, backed up a scooter, or waited at a curb ramp while a robot decided what to do. The convenience is counted to the decimal. The other side of the ledger is blank.

The design does a quieter kind of work. The companies give the robots rounded corners, big eyes, and first names. When one struggled to climb a flooded curb in the rain, a bystander filmed it and the comments cheered it on: "go coco, go." Someone else, filming a robot out in the rain, said, "she's doing her best." Children sit on them. A man walking his dog called them quirky dogs and said he liked that they had names. After one robot smashed a glass bus shelter and scattered the pieces across the sidewalk, the company bought ad space on the repaired shelter and ran the robot apologizing, by name, for its "dramatic entrance." You are not only asked to step aside. You are asked to feel that stepping aside was a small kindness to something small. That feeling is the reason the bill never comes.

I want to be fair to the robots, because the honest case for them is strong. "Why move a two-pound burrito in a two-ton car?" one company asks, and it is a good question. An independent study of grocery runs found that a sidewalk robot did the job for about one kilogram of carbon against six for the same trip in a gas SUV. Cars killed more than seven thousand American pedestrians in 2024; a box that moves at walking speed is far less likely to kill anyone, even if it is not harmless. And plenty of people order delivery not out of laziness but because they are sick, or old, or disabled, or alone late at night, and for them the robot is not a toy, it is a door. When one of these machines replaces a car that would have made the same trip, it is very likely the better machine, and I am not going to pretend otherwise.

But notice who pays first, and in what coin. That same grocery study found that simply bundling your errands into a single car trip cut emissions by roughly half, so the robot mostly wins against the worst version of the alternative. And the cost of the robot's own uncertainty never lands on the company, or the customer, or the car it replaced. It lands on the sidewalk, on people who ordered nothing.

Which brings us back to the man on the scooter. After the video spread, the company explained what had gone wrong. Its safety system, it said, was "designed to predict pedestrians' intentions and yield right of way," and had "instead caused the robot to impede their way." The full stop that dropped the machine into his path was, in the company's own phrase, its "fail-safe state." At the same instant, by design, stopping was the robot's safe state and his wall.

There are tidy ways to put this to bed, and each one falls apart. It was one glitchy robot: except the company traced the failure to its everyday safety logic, the predict-and-yield system built to give way to pedestrians. He was reckless: except he was only moving to get around a machine that kept moving into him, and what stopped him cold was the robot's own full stop. It was growing pains, the kind better software fixes: except the real trouble is not that the robot misread the moment. The trouble is that when the robot is unsure, someone near it still has to read it and give way, and the robot is built so that the someone is a person. No patch removes that bargain. Better software can make the robot surer of itself; it cannot make the sidewalk stop asking a person to be the one who bends.

And the bargain is not the same for everyone. When a robot takes the clear part of the path, a walking adult loses a half second and a shoulder. The federal guidelines for sidewalks ask for forty-eight inches of continuous clear width, and they are careful to say that a pedestrian includes a person using a wheelchair or a mobility device, because for that person the missing room is not an annoyance. It can be the difference between passing and being stuck. The robot did not have to hit him to take the path he needed. It only had to stand where he was going. For you it is a half second. For him it was the option to pass.

Then the second bill came due, the one the cuteness had been quietly running up the whole time. The video reached more than twenty-six million views, and part of the crowd it drew sided with the robot. People said he had done it on purpose. People said he was after a payout. People announced they were on the robot's team, and some of them sent him death threats. The machine that was built to be pitied had a public. The man who could not get down his own sidewalk now had to prove he was not lying. What he said he wanted is the plainest line in the whole story: "I just wanted to get from one place to another on a public space, safely and unimpeded."

The robots are still out there at walking speed, flags up, eyes lit, learning, as one of the company's managers put it, to be "one with sharing the sidewalk." One will yield to you today, and you will feel a little generous letting it by. That is the design, working. Somewhere on the same block, someone is doing the arithmetic the rest of us never notice we are doing, and finding that this time it does not come out. The tax was always being collected. The only thing the cuteness ever decided was who would be made to move, and who would not.
