The verdict on the Vision Pro is already written, and it reads like a receipt. $3,499 to start, before the prescription lenses, the travel case, and the care plan carry it past four thousand. 600 grams on your face, another 350 in a battery tethered to your pocket. More than 600 apps at launch, and none built by Netflix, Spotify, or YouTube. Headaches after ten minutes. Eye strain. This week some first buyers are packing it back into the box, because the fourteen-day return window closes on Friday, and the reasons they give all come off that receipt: too heavy, too dear, too little to do.
Every reason is true. Every reason also describes a first version. This is the case the machine's defenders make, and it is a fair one: the hardware gets lighter, the price comes down, the catalog fills in. One analyst already pencils in a cheaper model and millions of buyers a few years out. None of that is promised, but it is the ordinary path, and this company has walked it before. Argue only about the receipt and you may be arguing about the part that changes.
So set the receipt down. The deepest flaw in this machine is not that it costs too much, weighs too much, or does too little. It is that the better it gets at building a perfect world for one person, the worse it gets as a technology for anyone else in the room. Each improvement makes it more solitary, not more social. The wonder and the loneliness are one feature, seen from two sides.
The tell is in the reviews, if you read them for it. The people who admired this device most are the ones who sound loneliest. One reviewer called it the best wearable display he had ever put on, then wrote that he could sit in his own world, inches from his own family. Everything seems so real." To him, a full world. To the crowd, a man in a glass mask with a cable, pinching at the air. Later he called it the future interface for all computing, and also said no one should wear one in public.
This is an old pattern wearing new hardware. An earlier face computer, a decade ago, got itself banned from a Seattle bar because the customers came, in the owner's words, "to be not known," and could not tell whether the glasses across the table were filming them. The headset after that was so absorbing that an office had to convert a storage closet into a private booth to use it. The one after that let each person in a room see everyone else's little floating avatar, but never their own. Each generation fixed one problem of the body and uncovered a fresh one in the room. This device brings the best passthrough anyone has made and the first serious outward attempt to hand the face back, and the room still cannot read the person wearing it.
Now the strongest case against all of this, stated plainly, because it might be right. Every device that ends up in every pocket looked ridiculous first. A decade ago only about one person in eight thought it was fine to take out a phone at family dinner, and yet nearly nine in ten pulled one out at their last gathering anyway. The thing was judged rude and used constantly, and the rudeness wore into a rule: fine on the street, fine on a train, still frowned on at dinner. Wireless earbuds got called "goofy plastic earrings" the year they launched, and the look faded fast. Norms are slow, then sudden. Make the headset lighter, drop the price, fix the avatar, let two people in one room finally share a window, and the lonely living room is just what a first draft looks like. But first, be exact about the quarrel. A face computer may still reach someone a country away. Maybe it is the nature of putting a private computer on a human face. The reviews cannot settle it. They prove only that thoughtful people found the thing strange to sit beside. They do not prove why.

No. He is wide awake, deep inside a world built to fit one person, looking at the room around him in full color. From two feet away there is no way to tell the difference, and that is not the machine failing. That is the machine working.
